Children’s Workshops

Themes and activities are based on temporary and permanent exhibition topics, gallery discussions, and related Pennsylvania history. Each workshop is 5$ per participant. Parents are welcome to participate in the activities. Most lessons and activities are designed for students in elementary and middle school but some exceptions apply. 

January 10, 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm: Who were the Mummers?
The Mummer’s Parade is a huge tradition each year in Philadelphia but it is not seen anywhere else in the country. It is believed to be the oldest folk festival in the United States and it is right in our backyard! Snack included.

January 23, 2:30 pm – 4:00 pm: The Craft of Braided Rugs
Braided rugs have been made since the early days of America. When it first began, scraps were used to create these rugs to warm up a cold floor. Now it has become and art form for many people. Come and make your own braided rug! Snack included.

February 14, 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm: Valentine’s Day Around the World
Valentine’s Day is celebrated in many different ways throughout the world and we will be learning all about these traditions! Snack included.

February 27, 2:30 pm – 4:00 pm: Inside the Ancient Roman’s Home
Let’s go back in time and into the homes of the ancient Romans! Their homes were different from the homes we have today and we will be learning how these homes were designed. Snack included.

March 14, 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm: St. Patrick’s Day Traditions
St. Patrick’s Day is a day of green and tricks! How did this come to be for this Irish holiday! Snack included.

March 27, 2:30 pm – 4:00 pm: Customs of the Lenape Native Americans
The Lenape tribe lived in the surrounding area, where they successfully lived off the land. The Lenape had their own set of customs and rituals that set them apart from other Native American tribes across the country. Come and learn about these customs! Snack included.
